Big Blog 2: Reggeaton

    Reggaeton is a very popular genre that emerged from the streets of Puerto Rico in the late 1990s. It has become a global sensation, igniting dance floors and continuously topping charts worldwide. This rhythmic mix of Latin, Caribbean, and urban influences has transformed the music scene, captivating audiences worldwide with its infectious beats and energetic vibes. In my blog, I will be talking about the roots, evolution, and impact of Reggaeton and will be sharing some of the most significant artists in this genre through various music samples that showcase its dynamic range.

    Not many people may know this, but Reggaeton's story begins with the fusion of Jamaican dancehall rhythms and Panamanian reggae. Picture the neighborhoods of San Juan, where DJs and artists experimented with beats, blending Caribbean and Latin sounds. The result was a unique sound that would take the world by storm.

    One example of this is Daddy Yankee's "Gasolina". A Reggaeton anthem that catapulted the genre into the mainstream. Released in 2004, this track is a perfect introduction to the genre's infectious energy and unmistakable rhythm. The catchy chorus and relentless beats make it a timeless classic. Although I am sure many of you know of this song, I have attached the song below so you can all have a listen:


    Reggaeton's journey from the streets of Puerto Rico to global dominance is a testament to its universal appeal. As the genre evolved, artists incorporated elements of hip-hop, electronic music, and traditional Latin rhythms, creating a sound that resonated with diverse audiences.

    A good example of Reggaeton song that appealed to people outside of Puerto Rico is the song titled, "Mi Gente" by J Balvin and Willy William. With its multilingual lyrics and infectious beats, the song became an international sensation, proving that Reggaeton is a genre without borders. The collaboration with French artist Willy William showcases the genre's ability to transcend cultural boundaries.     Now, Reggaeton is more than just a genre; it is a cultural phenomenon that has left a mark on fashion, dance, and mainstream music. From the rise of iconic dance moves like the "perreo" to the influence on fashion trends, Reggaeton has become a lifestyle and a celebration of Latin and Caribbean cultures.

    And now, to talk about my current favorite artist, Bad Bunny is a trailblazing artist in the Reggaeton scene who brings a unique edge to the genre with his music. An example of this is his song titled, "Soy Peor." This emotionally charged track explores themes of heartbreak and self-reflection, showcasing the genre's ability to convey a wide range of emotions. Bad Bunny's unapologetic approach has resonated with a new generation of listeners, making him a global icon. Below I have attached the song that got me hooked on his music: 



    Beyond its infectious beats and danceable rhythms, Reggaeton has also become a platform for artists to address social issues, from inequality to political unrest. The genre's lyrics often reflect the realities of life in Latin America and provide a voice for communities that are often marginalized. An example of this how Residente, formerly of Calle 13, uses his song "Somos Anormales" to challenge societal norms and celebrate individuality. The track's thought-provoking lyrics, combined with a fusion of musical styles, exemplify how Reggaeton can be a powerful tool for social commentary. It's a reminder that behind the beats, there's a deeper narrative waiting to be explored.     Reggaeton's journey from the streets of Puerto Rico to the global stage is a testament to its cultural significance and musical innovation. Reggaeton is more than just music; it's a dynamic expression of identity and a bridge that connects people across borders.

Music and Family

     For the purpose of this interview, I chose to interview my mother who is not only 28 years older than me, but also grew up in a very different environment which I know greatly impacted the way she was exposed to music. Because she grew up in a small village in Mexico in the middle of nowhere, she did not have access to the technological advances that other people around the world may have had.     I began this interview by asking, "What are your earliest memories of music?". My mother stated that she has fond memories of discovering and learning new music through cancioneros or song books. It was through these song books that she discovered her love for Ranchero artists like Pedro Infante, Vicente Fernandez, and Antonio Aguilar.
