Music & Me
Hello, my name is Selenia Villa, this is my second year at Converse University and I am majoring in Elementary Education. I have lived in Spartanburg for the majority of my life, but I was born in Providence, Rhode Island where I lived for three years before moving down to South Carolina. When I was younger I used to say that I did not like music and felt no connection to it. Only as an adult was I able to discover my love for music as well as discover that music connected me to my family all along.
I have been a fan of Bad Bunny for almost seven years now, but recently I started feeling more connected to his music and especially his latest album titled, Un Verano Sin Ti. I think my recent obsession with his album stems from the day that I went to the club with my closest friends and we danced to Bad Bunny's music until our feet were swollen. I distinctly remember listening to the song titled, "Ojitos Lindos" and feeling a sense of euphoria as I was dancing surrounded by all of my friends. "Ojitos Lindos" is a song that I can still play today and it will make me feel both a rush of happiness and sadness simultaneously.
2. An example of music that is deeply important to me:
Before anyone is old enough to find the kind of music that they enjoy for themselves, they grow up listening to the music that their parents listen to, and in the process, they end up creating memories with the music that their parents listened to. This is the case for me with the song titled "Quiereme" by Los Bukis. This song is one that I distinctly remember my father playing any time we got in the car to go anywhere. Its a song that was played on 17 hour long road trips to my home-state. Its a song that my father still plays on his phone when we sit down to play a game of barajas. It was played so much as I was growing up that I know all of the lyrics to the song even though I sometimes wish I did not.
3. An example of music I do not really connect with:
I have yet to listen to a piece of music that I totally dislike, but I will admit that there is music out there that I do not particularly listen to. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this fact is the fact that for me, the artist that I do not listen to or connect to is Beyoncé. It is no secret that most of the world loves Beyoncé and her music, but for some reason, I have never been able to fall in love with her music the way that others have. I will admit she has a lot of iconic songs, but even then, I cannot consider myself a fan of hers because I simply cannot seem to connect with her style of music. Even so, I simply cannot say that I dislike a particular song of hers, so instead, I will attach a song of hers that I think most everyone loves...
4. Music I would like to share with you:
There is not much that I can say about why I like this song other than the fact that it came up on a Spotify playlist in my car while I was running late for work and I have been listening to it almost every day for the past two weeks. I will say, I think the most satisfying part of this song for me are the vocals.

I really like the melody of “Quiremere!” It’s so true how we create memories with the music we grew up listening to from our family. Also, your zero connection with Beyonce reminds me of my dad. He also isn’t a fan of Beyonce and has never liked even one of her songs.
ReplyDeleteI've never really been into Bad Bunny but I know that he has a big community of fans. I really do love the beat of the song and the lyrics.
ReplyDeleteSelenia, thanks for sharing this music with us; I enjoyed the listen! I love that you found a connection to music and to your family through music. I completely relate to the feeling of not finding a piece of music that I completely dislike; there's usually something I can connect to and I can almost always see the value in a piece or a song even if I have a hard time connecting with it personally.
ReplyDeleteSelenia, by far, I love your taste in music. I also love Junior H, Bad bunny, and others like Peso Pluma or Ivan Cornejo. However, I do not speak spanish at all, but there is just something about these songs that are just so good. I also connect songs with family and friends and I also love the memories that certain songs bring us.
